Robotics with BBC Micro:bit

Course Info

In this course, students learn to program the Micro:bit as a part of a robotic system. Students interact with a pre-built Micro:bit robot and explore its various capabilities. They then learn about each of the component of the robot, their functions and how such components can perceive and perform in a given environment. This course is a follow up to the BBC Micro:bit basics for Kids course and uses the Microsoft Makecode drag and drop programming environment. Students will learn to install and use specialised blocks for robot interaction.

Activities and related coding covered in this course:

  • Adjusting motor speeds to maintain straight line movement

  • Making the robot move, spin and turn with code

  • Controlling the RGB LED lights on the robot to create various colour patterns

  • Coding the robots speaker to output tones

  • Using pen attachment on the robot

  • Draw different shapes and patterns with code

  • Using the ultrasonic sensor to recognise obstacles

  • Using the IR sensors to follow a line

At the end of the course, students will independently design and code a project using the learnings from this course.
